After a long while without touching base with Mr Paul Siwela, the leader of Matebeleland Liberation Organization (MLO), we recently made contact to establish issues about the state of the organization he leads and the extent the organization is championing the cause of Matebeleland Independence. I put the following questions to Mr Siwela regarding the matters indicated above.

Thembani Dube
: What is the state of Matebeleland Liberation Organization (MLO) at this moment in time?

Mr Siwela: MLO is stronger than ever before and continues to enjoy growth and recognition from other liberation movements, business, NGOs and above all Matebele citizenry and raring to go, ready to lead Matebele nation to its Independence and Sovereignty and join the family of nations as a sovereign State. Internal fissures in both Zanu PF and MDC formations inform us that we should now pursue our agenda very aggressively. It is now or never! .The Matebele Nation must know and understand that the internal fissures manifesting themselves in Zanu PF and MDC formations are driven by individual egos, monetary rewards, power hunger yet our agenda is driven by the ultimate desire for freedom and independence which Matebele nation is ready to sacrifice for its attainment. Matebeles are ashamed to continue to be called Zimbabweans and find it very embarrassing to be associated with the name Zimbabwe whatever it means. Matebeles are NOT Zimbabweans and would Never Be Zimbabweans under their own free will.

Thembani Dube
: So how then is Matebeleland Liberation Organization going to capitalize on this situation to gain independence for Matebeleland by 2018?

Mr Siwela:  We are a liberation movement and as such we cannot afford the luxury of parading all our strategies and plans in public as this may jeopardize our cause. We are pleased to note that the 5 Independence indices which remain as our sign post   are now partially manifesting in the Zimbabwean political landscape. Besides, we have within our arsenal, the legal warfare and economic warfare strategies with the former having been activated and the later due to deliver the knock out jab that would lead to negotiations.

Thembani Dube:
What kind of Matebeleland are you advocating for?

Mr Siwela: We are advocating for the restoration Matabeleland statehood that would emerge as The Republic of Matebelelend. The republic will be founded on democratic values with a clean bill of rights whereby all citizens regardless of tribe, race or creed will enjoy equal opportunities and protection by the state and have equal obligations towards the state.  Among other things, all citizens shall have equal access to economic opportunities, education, and work and be able to compete for the highest office in both government and private sector. Not what is happening currently at Zanu PF and the MDCs where all top positions are a proscribed for Matebeles and other minorities?

Thembani Dube: What responsibilities does Britain as a colonial power that destroyed Matebeleland has on remaking Matebeleland as  state or Kingdom that it once was?

Mr Siwela: Britain has the political responsibility to revoke the evil "Matabeleland Order in Council" and the "Rule by Conquest" which expose Matabeles to exploitation, abuse, oppression and potential annihilation by successive Rhodesia/ Zimbabwe governments.MLO is communicating and engaging with the British government and such initiatives shall continue to be conducted privately until such time that it becomes prudent to make the details public. We don’t believe in megaphone diplomacy.

Thembani Dube:  Has MLO seriously done its home-work for the 2018 date you have chosen for the attainment of Matebeleland Independence?

Mr Siwela: As MLO, we have done a lot of work and more is yet to be done towards our goal of achieving an independent and sovereign Republic of Matabeleland by 2018 or thereabout. That includes among others, internationalization of our cause, lobbying for support  in Africa and overseas, signing deals with our friends that are interested in helping us, mobilization of Matebele masses and making them aware of our intentions and that time to stand up and liberate ourselves has come. We are pleased with the enthusiasm the Matebele nation is responding to the call to free themselves and the commitment to sacrifice for the cause. We dare say the time has come.

Thembani Dube:  Finally Mr Siwela seeing how pigheaded the President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe is and how he plays skulduggery politics with political foes inside and outside his party, will he and his hardliners negotiate for the Independence of Matebeleland by 2018?

Mr Siwela:
There are negative consequences for refusing such a peaceful political discourse as President Mugabe may face the wrath of Matebeles that suffered genocide and continue to suffer discrimination and oppression at his hands. MLO should not be held responsible should that happen. It is interesting and invigorating to observe that by the time we are engaged by the Zimbabwe government, the current political turbulence suggest that President Robert Mugabe  would have stepped down as the President of  The Republic of Zimbabwe in favour of his political novice  Grace Mugabe  after 2018 elections and remain the president of Zanu PF. We have always maintained that the fate of Zimbabwe is between Zanu PF and MLO and the current turbulence in Zanu PF moves towards vindicating us. We wish to bring to your attention that in our private meetings with the people of Matabeleland we come across angry people of all walks of life that want independence as soon as yesterday and are prepared to shed blood for it. Our facebook and whatsap inboxes and emails are also littered with such messages. How long are we going to tell oppressed and angry people to be patient? Only God knows, who can dare challenge God’s Plan?

Thembani Dube: Mr Siwela thank you once again for being on Agenda4Action and for sharing your movement’s views on the cause of Matebeleland Independence.

Mr Siwela: Thank you Thembani. I am always ready to share our narrative with your followers and the people of Matebeleland who are under oppression in Zimbabwe. May God bless the people of Matebeleland!
